Jeans fabric is a durable material that was traditionally used for workwear. Nowadays, you can find denim in all kinds of garments, and you can choose from different types of denim—from thick or thin, to stiff and sturdy, or elastic and comfortable. Jeans fabrics are also available in various shades and colors.
Jeans fabric is made using a so-called twill weave. The fibers used are usually mostly cotton. Polyester or elastic yarn is often added to this to provide greater wearing comfort.
Jeans without elastic yarn can be stiff, but the fabric becomes softer after wearing and washing. Over time, signs of wear and tear will appear in the fabric. With jeans fabrics, however, this is often perceived as a rugged, cool look.
It is best to wash the fabric before you start working with it, as it may shrink a little during the first wash. If you put the fabric in the dryer after the first wash, it will not shrink any further afterwards.
Denim fabrics are easy to cut. With thicker denim, however, it can require more strength, so you will need a good pair of scissors or a rotary cutter. Most denim fabrics (unwashed or bleached jeans) are stiff and have little stretch. Washing often makes the fabric more supple.
When sewing jeans fabric, use a denim needle. This type of needle is somewhat stronger. Also, finish the edges neatly to prevent further fraying.
Wash the finished garment inside out at a maximum of 30°C.
It is best to let the jeans fabric hang to dry. Make sure to hang the fabric as straight as possible.
You may iron jeans fabrics on the inside, but do not let the iron get too hot. You can also steam the denim occasionally instead of washing and ironing it. Do not put it in the dryer, as jeans fabric can shrink.
TIP: Hang your trousers up neatly from the bottom of the pant legs using a clamp hanger.
