What is felt?
Felt is a sturdy, non-woven fabric available in various thicknesses, namely 1 mm and 3 mm. Thinner felt is better suited for more delicate projects, such as a felt flower arrangement. Thicker felt provides more structure to items like a handbag or storage basket. Felt is also great for crafts and gluing projects.
The production of felt
Felt is made by compressing fibers. Before the fibers are compressed, they are treated with hot water. Most felt is made of 100 percent polyester. Special wool felt is a combination of sheep’s wool and polyester.
The properties of felt
Felt fabrics are sound-absorbing and have insulating properties. They are also resistant to temperatures ranging from -40°C to 110°C.
Working with Felt
Cutting
Felt fabrics are easy to cut or trim. The fabric also doesn’t need to be finished, since it doesn’t fray. So be sure to cut the edges straight.
Sewing
The fabric is quite dense, so you’ll need a sturdy needle. Use a size 100 needle to prevent it from breaking.
Caring for Felt Fabric
Washing
You don’t need to wash felt; airing it out is often enough. For stubborn stains, gently wash the felt in lukewarm water with a wool detergent. It is possible to wash felt in the washing machine, but be sure to select a special wool cycle with a low spin speed.
Drying
Do not put felt in the dryer; instead, let it air dry flat.
Ironing
Generally, you don’t need to iron felt. If you do want to iron it, don’t use too much steam (use the wool setting).
