What is water-repellent fabric?
Water-repellent fabric is, as the name suggests, a fabric that is resistant to water or moisture. Additionally, it is windproof, which is perfect for raincoats and bags, for example. The advantage of this fabric is that it is extremely strong and therefore difficult to tear.
What do you use water-repellent fabric for?
As we mentioned earlier, a water-repellent fabric is very suitable for items that need to withstand moisture, such as a heavy rain shower. Think of garden cushions, garden furniture covers, raincoats, and backpacks, but also changing pads and bibs. Properties of a water-repellent fabric
All water-repellent fabrics have the property of easily repelling dirt and water. A small stain can be easily wiped away with a damp cloth. This makes cleaning the fabric very easy. Additionally, not every water-repellent fabric is breathable, such as waxed cloths and fabrics made of 100% polyester. This is different for soft shell fabrics, which offer warmth and protection against water, but are also lightweight and ensure sufficient airflow.

How to turn water-repellent fabric into your new project
If you want to work with water-repellent fabric, it is important to have the right tools at hand. In most cases, the fabric is very sturdy. Is the fabric thinner? Then you can also use fabric scissors. Does the chosen fabric have an uncoated side? Then use that side for cutting to benefit from good grip. Additionally, we recommend using a long tailor's ruler to cut as straight as possible.
To sew the fabric together, you need a sturdy needle. Keep in mind, however, that the fabric must retain its function, namely being water-repellent. Therefore, do not perforate the fabric too much; for this reason, it is best to use a large stitch. For sewing, you can use Microtex needles, leather needles, or jeans needles.
Caring for water-repellent fabric
Water-repellent fabrics are easy to clean thanks to their coating. However, there are a number of things you should keep in mind to maintain the fabric.
Washing
Not every water-repellent fabric is suitable for washing. This is because the fibers may lose their water-repellent properties. You can wash the fabric with Harnizol by adding it to the rinse aid. On our product pages, we provide more information about the options for washing the fabric.
Drying
Because most water-repellent fabrics are sensitive to heat, we advise against putting them in the dryer. Fortunately, the fabrics dry quickly in the air.
Ironing
Ironing also depends on the material and the structure of the fabric. Coated fabrics should never be ironed on the coated side. You can provide extra protection for your fabric by ironing with a tea towel between the fabric and the iron.
