What types of furry fabrics are there?
There are different types of furry fabrics available, such as faux fur (imitation fur or fake fur made of synthetic fibers) and real fur. Because the quality of faux fur has improved enormously in recent years, these synthetic options often look and feel very similar to real fur. As a result, fake is often difficult to distinguish from real.
We briefly explain both types of fur below:
Faux fur (imitation fur or fake fur)
This type of fur is made of synthetic fibers. This makes it less expensive than real fur and highly popular with people looking for a more affordable alternative. Even though it is not real fur, this fabric still provides warmth and is comfortable to wear as clothing.
Synthetic fibers, such as polyester and acrylic, are an option for furry fabric. They are easy to obtain and maintain, and they are cheaper and more durable than real fur. Synthetic fibers can feel almost the same as imitation fur and they can also look quite identical.
Real fur
Real fur, on the other hand, is made from the pelts of animals; it is the animal skin with real hair. This can be the skin of animals such as foxes, bears, minks, cows, horses, seals, rabbits, sheep, llamas, alpacas, etc. Real fur is naturally much more expensive than faux fur, but it is also of higher quality and offers just a bit more warmth, because the skin acts as a backing layer.

TIP: Differences between faux fur and real fur are:
- Faux fur is usually attached to a mesh or woven fabric, whereas real fur is attached to skin/leather.
- If you blow through the hairs of the fur, the hairs of real fur will move more smoothly. You will also see a fluffy undercoat in real fur, and longer, thicker guard hairs stick out with a different color at the bottom. With faux fur, you often see hairs of the same thickness in a single color.
- Additionally, if you push a pin through the fur, the pin will glide easily through the backing layer with faux fur, whereas you will feel some resistance with real fur because of the skin.
