    What is crepe?

Crepe fabrics, also known as Georgette, get their pebbled appearance through the use of special crepe yarns. These are tightly twisted, causing the threads of the fabric to crinkle.

    The production of crepe

Crepe can be made from various materials, such as silk, wool, cotton, rayon, and polyester. This also makes the fabric popular among beginning designers. There is always a variant that suits your project.

    The properties of crepe fabric

The crinkled appearance of crepe allows for a beautiful drape. You can feel the ridges throughout the fabric, and it feels sturdy. The fabric does not tear easily, is slightly translucent, and drapes beautifully over any body type.

    Working with crepe

    Cutting

Crepe is a thin fabric, so cutting it is fairly easy. Do note that the fabric can easily slip away. It can help to weigh down the fabric during cutting to limit this slipping, for example by using drapery weights or pattern weights. It is best to cut crepe with sharp fabric shears.

    Sewing

Use thin needles and pins for sewing. If you are using crepe for clothing, consider using a lining so that the garment is not see-through. The fabric shifts easily, so ensure that the pattern pieces lie neatly and tightly on top of each other while sewing.

    Care of crepe fabric

    Washing

You can wash crepe fabrics in the washing machine, unless it is a woolen variant. Therefore, look carefully at which material was used for the crepe fabric. You can find this information on the product page of your chosen fabric.

    Drying

It is best not to put crepe in the dryer, as you might damage the structure of the fabric. Instead, it is better to air dry the fabric on a clothesline or on a hanger.

    Ironing

It is possible to iron crepe fabrics. However, since the fabric does not wrinkle easily, this is often unnecessary. If you do wish to iron the fabric, do so at a low temperature to avoid pressing out the crepe texture.
