What is caban fabric?
Caban fabric is a wool coating fabric or a high-quality wool blend. The fabric feels heavier, making it suitable for items such as overcoats, jackets, skirt suits, or skirts.
The production of caban fabrics
Caban fabric is typically a blend of wool and polyester. In some cases, the fabric is made of 100% polyester while retaining the look and warmth of the woolen version.
The properties of caban fabrics
Caban fabrics are very sturdy, soft, and warm. Wool is naturally temperature-regulating, breathable, and hard-wearing. Additionally, it has good moisture-absorbing capabilities. The polyester makes the fabric slightly lighter. When the caban fabric consists solely of polyester, it is less breathable.
Working with caban fabrics
Cutting
Pre-wash or steam-shrink the fabric beforehand if it contains wool. The fabric shrinks initially, which allows it to achieve the correct stretch and fit. Use fabric shears or a rotary cutter for this.
Steam-shrinking
Steam-shrinking is done by holding a steam iron about 4 cm above the fabric, keeping the iron in motion, and steaming the entire length of the fabric. This is done with woolen fabrics to prevent future shrinkage, also known as shrink-proofing the fabric. This invisible treatment eliminates relaxation shrinkage in woolen fabrics.
Sewing
The fabric is somewhat thicker, so it is best to use a thicker needle. Be sure to finish the seams as well.
Care of caban fabrics
Washing
Check the composition of the caban fabric carefully. In general, you wash the fabric on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees.
Drying
Do not put the fabric in the dryer, as you run the risk of the fabric shrinking. Let it air dry instead. Hang it neatly into shape on a thicker hanger.
Ironing
Ironing caban fabric is not recommended. Again, check the composition of the fabric and follow the advice for the most delicate fiber. Especially with wool, the fibers can burn under an iron. Polyester is also highly heat-sensitive.
